Department of Statistics, Faculty of MIPA, Holds 2-Credit Course Simulation for High School Students

FMIPA UII – As part of the 2024 new student admission promotion, the Department of Statistics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Islamic University of Indonesia (UII), tried something new by offering a 2-credit (90-minute) short lecture to 30 students of Muhammadiyah Boarding School Pleret Bantul Yogyakarta on Tuesday, 17 Sha’ban 1445 / 27 February 2024, at the Laboratory of Risk and Disaster Management Statistics, FMIPA UII.

The students were given a general overview of the Islamic University of Indonesia, including its history, university development, current facilities, and the student admission procedures. The session was delivered by Ms. Arum Handini Primandari, S.Pd.Si., M.Sc., who is currently the Secretary of the Department of Statistics at UII. All students appeared very enthusiastic about the session, especially as they had previously received brief information from their teachers regarding UII’s founding history, which originally started as the Islamic Higher School (Sekolah Tinggi Islam), a topic covered in their history class.

“We are very happy to see the oldest higher education institution in Indonesia in person, which turns out to be located in Yogyakarta. We were surprised that although it is the oldest university, almost all of its facilities are very modern,” said one student when asked by UII News about the visit.

After the general session, the students attended a special lecture on the Statistics Study Program of FMIPA UII delivered by a statistics lecturer. In this session, students were introduced to statistics, its vital role in everyday life, the available facilities in the Statistics Department of FMIPA UII, and career prospects in statistics. The lecture, presented with multimedia slides and interspersed with a quiz session guided by statistics students, was engaging for the participants, as shown by the number of students eagerly asking questions to learn more.

The activity concluded with a tour of the statistics laboratory, guided by lab assistants and statistics students.
