Statistics Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UII Wins Satria Data 2024 Championship

FMIPA UII  – The Statistics Study Program of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Islamic University of Indonesia (FMIPA UII) won 1st place in the Statistics Essay Competition (SEC) category at the prestigious national-level event “Statistika Ria dan Festival Sains Data (Satria Data)” 2024, organized by the Center for Talent Development of Indonesia’s National Achievement Center, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. The competition was held at Telkom University, Bandung, from 23 to 27 Muharram 1446H / 29 July to 2 August 2024M. UII was one of only two private universities that reached the finals of Satria Data 2024. In total, 18 universities from across Indonesia advanced to the final round. In addition to winning 1st place in SEC, UII also ranked among the top three in the overall standings at Satria Data 2024.

This achievement demonstrates that UII students, particularly from the Statistics Study Program, possess strong data analysis and problem-solving abilities relevant to local societal challenges. It reaffirms UII’s commitment to excellence in education and innovation. The team’s success also reflects the hard work and dedication of both students and faculty, solidifying UII’s standing as a leading institution in data science and analytics.

The winning team, led by Ahmad Syukri and comprised of members Muhammad Zaki Ramadhan and Atika Dwi Febriani, won the SEC with their essay titled Fresh Fruit Scan (FFScan): A Smart Solution Based on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for Tiered Freshness Detection of Fruits. The team conducted independent experiments and data collection to determine fruit freshness before decay. Their proposed model enables automated freshness prediction using photos or videos.

The team’s advisor, Mr. Achmad Fauzan, explained, “The idea came from the everyday challenge of consuming fruit—neither consumers nor sellers often know when the fruit becomes spoiled and unfit for consumption. We hope this initiative helps people to be not only smarter but also healthier, contributing to Indonesia Emas 2045 and the SDGs.”

Team leader Ahmad Syukri expressed his gratitude for the achievement: “This victory is the result of solid teamwork and support from our academic advisor. We hope this accomplishment will inspire other UII students to continue innovating and achieving in data science,” he said.

Separately, the Head of the Statistics Study Program at UII, Dr. Atina Ahdika, also conveyed her appreciation: “This achievement proves that UII students are of excellent quality and capable of competing at the national level. We hope this success serves as a stepping stone for our students to contribute to the development of science and technology in Indonesia,” she stated.

Satria Data is an annual competition organized by the Center for Talent Development under the National Achievement Center of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, aimed at fostering students’ interests and talents in the field of data.
